What it is | If my memory serves me right, a few months ago, I purchased a wristwatch online as a small indulgence for myself after exhausting workdays. It was from a reputable brand, and the advertisement promised it was stylish, durable, and even water-resistant. I thought it would be a practical choice, as I always desired to own a watch that could be suitable for both work and casual occasions. I had been on the lookout for a new one for quite some time, so I was really delighted to finally get it. |
When you bought it | I placed the order during a big year-end sale, around November. The discount looked quite appealing, therefore, I quickly bought it, thinking it was a good bargain. When the package arrived, I was thrilled to unbox it, and honestly, the watch looked even more tempting than the photos I had seen before, which made me feel even more enthusiastic at first. |
Why you returned it | However, after wearing it for a few days, I realized that it failed to meet my expectations. The strap did not fit my wrist properly, and the clasp was a bit loose, which made it uncomfortable to wear. On top of that, the surface scratched easily, so it already looked worn after a very short time. Considering all these issues, I decided to return it and ask for a refund, as keeping it would have been a waste of money. |
Explain how you felt about it | When looking back, I really had conflicting emotions. On the one hand, I felt a sense of relief because the store’s return policy was simple and I could receive my money back promptly. On the other hand, I was rather disappointed, since I had been looking forward to using the watch for various purposes such as work, social occasions, and daily life. Ultimately, this incident reminded me to be more cautious while making online purchases and not to be easily influenced by flashy marketing or attractive prices. |
Part 3
1. How does advertising influence people’s shopping decisions?
Honestly, I believe that advertising has a profound impact on people’s shopping decisions. Primarily, it does not only raise awareness of products but also shapes perceptions through persuasive techniques, like celebrity endorsements, appealing visuals, or catchy slogans. Moreover, advertisements often highlight unique features or advantages, making a product seem particularly desirable. In many cases, they can even trigger impulsive purchases, especially when they use emotional appeals or limited-time promotions to create a sense of urgency.
2. Do you think advertisements always provide accurate information? Why or why not?
Well, I don’t think that advertisements always present accurate information. Companies tend to focus on the positives of their products while downplaying or omitting potential drawbacks. For example, a skincare ad might promise fast results but rarely mentions side effects or that outcomes can differ among users. Many advertisements also use persuasive techniques to make products seem more impressive than they really are. So, although ads provide some information, it’s often selective and primarily aimed at influencing our perception rather than giving the full picture.
3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of online shopping?
It cannot be denied that online shopping offers several advantages. It is highly convenient and time-saving, as customers can make purchases from anywhere at any time. It also allows for easy comparison of prices and access to product reviews, which facilitates more informed decision-making. However, there are certain drawbacks. Sometimes the items received may not match the images or descriptions online, and the quality may be disappointing. Additionally, waiting for delivery and managing returns can be inconvenient.
4. Why do some people prefer shopping in physical stores instead of online?
Many individuals prefer shopping in physical stores because they can examine and handle products directly, which provides greater assurance regarding quality. They can also receive advice from sales staff, which is particularly valuable for products such as skincare or cosmetics where texture and color are vital. Furthermore, purchasing in-store allows them to obtain the items immediately without any waiting time.
5. Do you think that advertisements should be strictly regulated?
Yes, I believe advertising should be subject to stricter regulation. Currently, there is a tendency for some advertisements to be misleading or to exaggerate product benefits. Implementing stricter rules would protect consumers from being deceived and encourage companies to maintain honesty in their marketing. Nevertheless, regulations should be balanced to ensure that creative expression in advertising is not excessively restricted.
