Đề bài: People say that reading for pleasure helps people to develop imagination and better language skills than watching TV. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

SAMPLE:

It is safe to say that TV is among the most controversial inventions in modern history, due to its many side effects along with whatever benefits it offers. While its contribution to filling us with useful knowledge about the outer world from the comfort of our living room is undeniable, its capability of boosting our imagination and language skills is one cut behind that of books, according to many, myself included.

As readers go through their favorite novel, images of the protagonists and antagonists are subconsciously painted inside their mind, blending in with backgrounds and settings that differ from person to person. This is not the case in TV shows and movies, where characters are restricted to the physical embodiment of the actors playing them. Fans of the Harry Potter book series have their own imagination of Harry, while it is hard for movie viewers to think of any faces but Daniel Radcliffe’s in the role.

The type of language used in movies are also less advanced compared to that of novels due to the nature of these two means of entertainment. Exposition in books is a must because it is the only way to demonstrate what is happening to the audience. Since hardly can any lengthy novel be enjoyed in one sitting, writers spend more effort on refining each line and sentence. This acts as a natural way through which audiences can learn and effortlessly improve in terms of language. 

In conclusion, printed media indeed a more ‘active’ means of entertainment which readers have to work their mind in order to enjoy and appreciate, whereas TV shows and movies are more ‘passive’ and instant. It is not a bad habit to enjoy watching television, but books will still be a more beneficial leisure as far as I am concerned.
