1. Bài mẫu
Describe an interesting discussion that you had with friends.
You should say:
– Who you spoke to
– Where you were
– What the conversation was about
– And explain why you think it was interesting
Who you spoke to | To be honest, I’ve been involved in wide-ranging discussions with my friends on a regular basis, but there was a pretty intriguing conversation that I’ve had with my best friend years ago that spring to my mind immediately. |
Where you were | As far as I can recall, it took place when I had finished high school and been seeking a college for further education. At that time, I spent hours in consultation with my parents and teachers on which major I should be in. After a long time reaching my final decision, I craved a chance to express myself fully with my close friend, so I decided to go out for coffee to have a catch-up. |
What the conversation was about | We talked about our hopes and aspirations for future paths. When I was continuously talking about my university, she suddenly asked about my perspectives on a gap year after high school. At that moment, I was extremely surprised since she was a knowledgeable and intelligent student who attained the highest grade in my class. she also seemed to apply to one of the most prestigious universities directly. |
And explain why you think it was interesting |
I told her that entering higher education sounds like the opportunity of a lifetime. For this reason, she should consider all the options before making a choice. However, she said that our opinions on this issue are divided, she’d much prefer taking a gap year between high school and college. I could see her point, but I would strongly advise her to think of the degree of uncertainty surrounding the year of transition. What is more, if she didn’t have a goal to pursue, she would tend to become disorganized. Despite that, she firmly believed a year after high school could be a great way to gain more working experience for a potential career. She said that this could also make her more competitive in her field when looking for internships and jobs. Also, She also added that college was an enormous investment, so an extra year to prepare could help her pay the fees through the job salaries. Of course, taking a year of experimental learning is a controversial topic. But having said that, we had to agree to differ and took its benefits and drawbacks into consideration. That’s probably why I found the discussion particularly interesting to bear in mind. |

- When do children normally form their own views?
There are a number of researches on children’s sense of self development, but it has been suggested that by the time children are around eight years old, they will have general perceptions of their own character traits and feelings of self-esteem. Because at that point, they begin to develop the ability to think in concrete ways. This means they are aware of the act of thought processes and can consider many points of view. Obviously, they are getting better processing what happening in outside world.
- Do children have strong opinions?
I do think that there are differences between Western and Eastern children. Western parents are always prone to treat their children like friends and they feel respected. For that reason, Western children are more independent of holding their certainly strong opinions. Meanwhile, the young in the East are strictly controlled by their parents, and they play minor part in daily decision-making. Not surprisingly, children there do not usually express their extreme viewpoints.
- Should parents request their kids to obey them?
Well, individual preferences differ from person to person, but I think most parents tend to request their offspring to obey them. For one, children may suffer from a lack of maturity and experience of real life. And having taken parents’ advice and guidance not only helps children have positive view of the matter but also weigh up all the options before coming to a decision. Furthermore, if the children follow their parents’ step-by-step instructions, they will grow up responsible and self-disciplined.
