IELTS SPEAKING RIVER – PART 2 SAMPLE
Describe an important river/lake in your country
You should say:
- What is the river/lake called
- How do you know about it
- What it looks like
And explain why it is important.
What is this river/lake called | I’m going to talk about an ancient lake that is well known as a nationally famous destination. The lake is called Hoan Kiem lake, which means the “Returned Sword” lake. It is also called the Guom lake, which is another word for “sword” or “blade”. Hoan Kiem lake lies in the very heart of Ha Noi, Viet Nam’s capital city. It is special because of the historic tale tied to it. |
How do you know about it? | As a child, I liked to read picture books that told various myths and legends. One day, I came across the story about the lake’s significance when I was in elementary school. This is also the story that every child in Viet Nam grew up to. The tale follows the legendary Le Loi King who found out that he was gifted a sword from heaven and used it to battle against the colonization by a neighbouring country. After the war, as he was on a boat trip in the lake, a giant, sacred turtle rose to the surface and asked him to return the sword to the Dragon King. He did it without hesitation, which prompted the name of the lake. |
What it looks like | The Hoan Kiem Lake is a natural freshwater body of water and is considered one of the largest lakes in Viet Nam. Aside from the historic tale tied to it, the lake is also adored thanks to its divine beauty and elegance. The shades of green that the lake’s water possesses are not commonly found in other lakes. In the middle of the lake is the ancient Turtle Tower built on a small island called Turtle Island, which is dubbed the Soul of the capital. |
Explain why it is important. | The reason why Hoan Kiem lake holds a significant role in Vietnamese people’s hearts is partly due to the sword returning legend told for hundreds of years, and also because of its cultural beauty. Visitors are often recommended to take in the magnificence of the lake during both daytime and nighttime. It is believed that just a glance at the lake would put one’s mind at ease. The lake also used to house a lot of giant turtles, which were believed to be the descendants of the turtle in the story. |

IELTS SPEAKING RIVER – PART 3 SAMPLE
1. Why do so many people like going to places with water such as lakes, rivers or the ocean?
This is an interesting question. In my opinion, there are two main reasons. Firstly, many bodies of water can be fun places for people to do various leisure and enjoyable activities such as swimming, scuba diving, boating or even fishing. Thanks to the variety of things to do in places with water, the lakes, rivers, or the oceans may become accessible and entertaining destinations for both tourists and local people. The second reason might be because many people find it peaceful and soothing to be near water. The water’s coolness and serenity can help calm one’s mind and help them contemplate.
2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of going to places near water, such as a lake, a river or the ocean?
I’ve read some articles stating that being near water bodies or actively participating in water-based activities can immensely provide one’s mental and physical health with great benefits. A walk surrounded by the breezy air from lakes, rivers, or seas can help induce stress and anxiety, lower heart and breathing rates, and bring forth a sense of happiness and security; meanwhile, going for a swim in the water can help strengthen the muscles and joints. On the other hand, despite providing a sense of safety, water can be a common cause of harm and even death due to people not being aware enough to do warm-ups before going into the water or keep away from dangerous areas such as strong currents or deep areas.
3. Do you think water safety should be taught in schools so people can enjoy the water more safely?
Absolutely. When people are having fun in the water, potentially life-threatening accidents are often overlooked. As I’ve mentioned, people can easily hurt themselves or even put their life at risk for not being aware enough to follow safety procedures while being in the water, especially people who do not know how to swim or swim recklessly for fun. Not to mention, even people who know how to swim can easily be at risk of drowning. That’s why I think water safety should be taught and demonstrated in school for young children first and foremost to prevent regrettable incidents from happening.
NEW WORDS AND PHRASES:
- bodies of water/water bodies (n): thủy vực
- soothing (adj): êm dịu
- serenity (n): sự êm đềm
- contemplate (v): thưởng ngoạn
- strong currents (n): sóng to
- life-threatening (adj): nguy hiểm tính mạng
- put one’s life at risk (phrase): đặt mình vào tình huống hiểm nghèo
