The pie graph provides data on 4 primary factors causing the poor performance of farming land, while the table illustrates the impact of these factors in North America, Europe, and Oceania in the nineties.

Overall, there is not much difference between the 3 main factors causing degradation in agricultural land around the globe. Additionally, each mentioned country seemed to face a different major problem for land quality deterioration.

In the 90s, 35% of land worldwide was degraded by overgrazing, which was also the most influential among the reasons provided. In the second place, deforestation was accountable for 30% of the deteriorating agricultural land. Despite making up more than a quarter of the cause, over-cultivation only came in third at 28%. In addition, other factors were less considerable and just constituted 7% of the overall factors.

During the 1990s, deforestation had the least effect on degraded land in North America at 0.2%, while it was the most detrimental problem for agricultural land in Europe, at 9.8%. Meanwhile, over-cultivation, which is responsible for the highest proportion of downgraded land in North America at 3.3%, was not an issue for land degradation in Oceania. However, Oceania’s land severely suffered from over-grazing at 11.3%, in comparison with only 1.5% in North America. Significantly, Europe held the highest proportion of damaged land among the 3 given countries, at 23%.
