| Whose house it is | My childhood friend’s house is like a home away from home for me. I have known her since we were babies and we also went to school together up until high school. Our relationship only had the opportunity to be this tight knit because we lived next door. Since it was quite literally only a few steps away, I visited her house very often and became familiar with it. |
| Where it is located | Her house is in district 4, Ho Chi Minh city and down a few blocks from a public park that we called “Firework park” because of the explosive-looking lighting. Other than the park, the home is also within walking distance of many amenities stores so the area is a convenient place to live. Although, it is situated near the main road, which could get overwhelmingly busy during high hours. |
| What it looks like | It is a two-story building, not too small but also not too large. The exterior is overgrown with plants in a way that makes it stand out among the other houses in the neighbourhood. Despite the plants climbing up the walls and falling down the balcony, the building does not feel like it was not taken care of. My favorite part is the interior though. Since the house has been passed down for generations, there are collections of many objects everywhere that were put there by the residents, providing a lot of personal touches for the home and making it feel very lived in. The interior basically exudes this cozy and comforting feeling to all those who visit it. |
| Explain why you like or remember it | About why I love this place so much, it is because I have a lot of emotional attachments here. I used to have sleepovers at my childhood friend’s place at least once each week so it is only natural that I made some of my fondest memories in this home. Although I do not pay as many visits as I did before, I will still cherish the precious moments that I have inside that warm and welcoming house. |
Part 3:
1. What types of houses are popular in your country?
Young people nowadays seem drawn to modern house trends like minimalism, meaning that the house looks and includes only the basic necessity for the home owner. Because of the “no waste” rule, usually these kinds of houses are sparsely decorated, which probably makes it easier to clean. However, for the same reason, minimalism tends to look clinical, and lacks the warmth and homey feelings. Older generations, in contrast, lean towards maximalism. This house style gets the benefit of looking customized and tailored to the taste of the owner, but is a pain to maintain cleanliness without extra help.
2. Do you think the design of a building affects people’s mood?
I believe the building’s aesthetics plays a bigger role in people’s mood than most may think. The chosen colors alone already have some notable effects. For example, the bedroom, the place we sleep, is frequently painted with soft colors like baby blue or beige. This is because these colors give off a gentle aura and are associated with calmness, which aids in relaxing the mind. If a bedroom was painted bright neon green, most would find the room to look like an eyesore from the annoyingly bright color, causing unrest when the place was meant to be where people recuperate.
3. How can governments make buildings safer?
There should be strict building inspections to ensure every house is structurally secure for many years. Some companies prioritise profits to the point of doing the bare minimum and sacrificing the building’s integrity, leading to homes being unsafe and having smaller lifespans. To make sure that these builders do not try such things, the government must regularly send out inspectors to evaluate the quality of constructions and give out penalties when the standards are not met. Of course, the fee should be high enough to deter the companies from ever falling short of the expected quality.
