However, I eventually cracked up since their situations are relatable, like awkward dates, failed job interviews, and silly arguments with friends. |

1/ Is comedy popular in your country?
I think comedy is a core part of the Vietnamese entertainment culture, though its forms have changed significantly over time. Back in the day, traditional improv comedy groups were popular to the point that they even had their own dedicated live shows and TV shows. Most people at the time preferred slapstick and physical comedy because they were easy to comprehend and appealed to all age groups. As of now, everything is comedy or at least has some comedic aspects to it. You can find humorous elements in almost all types of media, namely: stand-up comedy, TikTok videos, reality TV shows,…
2/ What makes humour universal?
I think it has a few key elements. The first thing that comes to my mind is relatability; the diversity of humour often springs from shared human experiences like love, embarrassment, cheesiness, and so on. Everyone can see a bit of themselves in these scenarios, and the humour echoes widely. Another element is about surprise. I see that a joke usually involves setting up an expectation and then ruining it with a punchline or an action. We find it funny because it is unpredictable, and we don’t need complicated words to understand. And yeah, I think that’s what makes the humour truly universal.
3/ What tricks do professional comedians use?
Wow, I’m not an expert in this field, but I guess most comedians refer back to a joke they told earlier in the show. How can I explain this…? Like, they can spend five minutes at the beginning talking about some terrible things they have experienced. Then later on, they will refer back to the prior joke. It’s a common way for comedians to use because it rewards the attentive audience, which creates a powerful feeling of connection and makes the joke even funnier.
