IELTS Speaking: Describe a garden or park that you visited

You should say:

  • Where it is
  • What you did there
  • What it looks like

And explain how you felt about it.

Where it is One of the recent places I really enjoyed visiting was Le Van Tam Park, a large public park located in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City
What you did there I went there with my best friend last Sunday, hoping to escape from all the deadlines just for a while. We spent a few hours leisurely taking a stroll along the pathways. I remembered at that time, we stumbled upon a group of elderly locals practicing yoga, which added the meditative atmosphere to the place. After that, we grabbed some juice from the street vendor and sat on a bench, just people-watching and enjoying each other’s company.
What it is like. The park itself is quite spacious, with well-maintained lawns. It’s full of tall, shady trees, colorful flowers, and open grassy areas where families can gather and have a picnic. There are also designated zones with outdoor fitness equipment for all residents to work out. Even though the park is located in a densely populated area, it remains quiet, shielded from the hustle and bustle outside its gates.
Explain how you felt about it. The visit left me mentally refreshed. It was one of the most simple experiences that reminded us how nature is so essential to our psychological well-being. Spending time at the park helped me to unwind, and focused more on my breathing . Since then, I have built up a habit to return whenever I need a short escape from reality.

Part 3:

  • Should cities have more public gardens and parks?

I would say the merits vary, having more gardens and parks in urban areas is essential for environmental and social reasons. Not only does green spaces help reduce air pollution and improve the overall air-quality, but they also offer a place where people can relax, exercise, and spend time around nature, which will be great to improve their physical and mental health. So yes, I think cities should prioritize and provide more vital community assets

  • Are such facilities useful in small towns?

Well, they are actually useful in small towns. Even though rural areas have less traffic and pollution, residents still need space to relax and enjoy nature as well. Parks and gardens can improve the people’s quality of life by giving them space to spend time alone or with their loved ones. Also, in smaller communities like this, these areas are often becoming a social hub where neighbors can socialize and host different outdoor events. So I think these kinds of facilities play an important role, regardless of the size of the town.

  • What can people learn from spending time in nature?

When you have some time in the green surroundings, it can provide a lot of benefits, I would say. Being in nature teaches you patience and mindfulness. It helps you to slow down a bit, get away from digital entertainment, and reflect on your thoughts and emotions. Having some time with nature also lets you learn about how ecosystems work, and why the environment is crucial to the planet.

  • What facilities should be added to public gardens?

Well, I think there are a few important facilities that could be added to parks to make them more comfortable and enjoyable for visitors. For example, having a playground is great for families because it gives children a safe space to play while parents can relax nearby. I also think walking and cycling paths are a good idea, as they encourage people to be more active. It would be helpful to have refreshment stands too, especially in hot weather, so people can stay hydrated. And of course, restrooms are a must, they’re basic but really necessary for comfort and hygiene, especially if people plan to spend a lot of time there.
