IELTS Speaking Part 2 & 3 | Topic: Traditional Products

Đề bài: Describe a traditional product of your country that you like.

Part 2

Describe a traditional product of your country that you like. You should say:

  • What is it
  • How it is made
  • When you tried it for the first time

And explain why you like it.

What is it Well in this part, I’d love to talk about “Non la” or the Vietnamese conical hat, one of the most important products in my country. Ever since I was a young boy, this iconic hat has appeared a lot in my daily life and can be spotted across the countryside around Vietnam. Like many other traditional costumes of Vietnam, Non la has its origin, coming from a legend related to the history of rice growing in Vietnam. The story is about a goddess who wore a hat made of four round-shaped leaves to guard against all the rain. After the Goddess was gone, Vietnamese farmers built a temple to commemorate her as the Rain-shielding Goddess and the Non la has become more popular among Vietnamese people, especially the farmers.
How it is made

It never ceases to amaze me how much patience and ingenuity are required to create a simple Non la. It is made from palm leaves which are grown mainly in the Northern regions of Vietnam. Their design allows rainwater to run off and also shields users from the harsh rays of the sun. You may also see them used as carrying devices, full of fruit or other dry goods. You’ll see them worn by farmers working in the rice fields, as well as on people on market stalls or even building sites.
When you tried it for the first time As I mentioned before, the Non la has become a part of my daily life that I could even say I grew up with it. Both my mother and my grandma usually wear Non la whenever they go to the market or visit their neighbours or relatives. My mind still remembers the first time that I used Non la in my childhood. It was a traditional fashion show and I was very proud to wear the Ao dai along with the Non la on stage. The outfit was very beautiful and I got lots of compliments after that. Also, the Non la fitted like a glove and was very comfortable too.
And explain why you like it

Non la, which is a very important and special symbol of Vietnam, is appreciated by both the young and the elderly. It’s also a unique and special souvenir that many foreign tourists to Vietnam would like to take home. Personally, there are a few reasons why I like it, but the two main reasons are: it’s durable which has been proven for a very long time and it can be versatile on many occasions.
Although there are many other modern hats with different styles and colours, Non la still retains its value and is being favored by many Vietnamese families, including mine.

Part 3

1/ What are the benefits of traditional products to locals?

In my opinion, there are some advantages about traditional handicrafts to the community. For instance, the products are usually bought by both native people and foreign tourists as a souvenir, which can be a reliable source of income for the craftmen. Another thing is that in our generation, it is very easy for a country to lose its sense of uniqueness. Hence, traditional products can also highlight the local culture and remind the youngsters of their roots.

2/ Do you think the government should help in the promotion of traditional products?

Yes, I definitely think so. As we can see, many traditional craft villages have faced many challenges in their development nowadays as imported products are dominating the market. Therefore, people practicing traditional crafts can’t live on their jobs, which leads to the decline of the traditional products. However, governments can prevent this by enacting different legislation to promote the sales or by introducing modern technology to replace the current old equipment.

3/ Is it necessary to protect tradition?

From my point of view, it’s extremely crucial to preserve cultural history in the globalization era. In many cases, traditional items, crafts, and food can unite a country, race, or ethnicity. This also creates a stronger sense of national pride and admiration, which in turn forms a national identity. A country without those can be lost by not having any purpose and independent view of the world.

  • ethnicity (n): the fact of belonging to a group of people that share a cultural tradition – dân tộc
