SAMPLE

The effect of climate change on the global business atmosphere is often debated: while some believe climate change puts a damper on the flow of goods and services, others claim that this change breeds new opportunities. This essay argues that climate change is a ground upon which businesses can thrive, while considering both points of views.

Many businesses are wary of the ramifications of climate change. The oil and gas industry, for example, finds climate change an existential threat as the scorn against greenhouse gasses emissions grow: starting with Finland in 1990, nations across the globe have levied taxes on the use of fuel. Faced with the masses’ growing demands for actions against climate change, governments would likely implement increasingly stricter fiscal policies, costing businesses in the oil and gas industry their profit.

However, some also believe that the global temperature change would present opportunities and open up new markets. The switch from fossil fuel to clean and sustainable energy creates a demand for alternatives to burning coal and gas, such as using solar panels, wind turbines, or hydropower. Henceforth, there are opportunities for research and investments to standardize these environmentally-friendly energy sources. Furthermore, climate change has prompted the search for clean and sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels, hence promoting long-term viability of new energy markets.

To reiterate, while it is certain that climate change brings about causes for concern for businesses in the oil and gas industry, it also creates opportunities for new businesses as climate change provides incentives for demand to switch to alternative energy sources. Taking into account the limited resources that fuel the oil and gas industry, it is clear this trend towards clean energy alternatives bears both short-term and long-term positive outcomes.
