It seems that a large number of people are opting for studying in an academic environment instead of vocational training, there is an opinion claiming that people should choose the latter route, especially when there is a shortage of skilled workers in those areas such as electricians or plumbers. From my perspective, this statement is completely true due to several factors.
First of all, I believe that many people enroll in universities without clear purposes and strong motivation. In fact, enrolling in a university, in the modern time, has begun to manifest as a common social norm. Young adults follow this pattern and only a few possess the ability to make it work out great for them. The rest normally struggle to fit in or reach the end of the path. For instance, for many years, parents in Vietnam impose their ideas on younger generations, forcing them to attend universities without knowing if the choice is a good deed or not. As a result, lots of Vietnamese students at universities are just as confused and unmotivated since they have no specific goals for what they are about to learn and study. Consequently, the chance that Vietnamese students graduate from universities on-time are surprisingly low and even if they manage to complete their education, they barely meet the requirements of employers. As such, I think enrolling in a university is not always the proper answer.
Regarding the vocational training option, I strongly agree that it should be promoted due to these reasons. To start with, by going to vocational colleges or institutions, young people can have brighter career paths in comparison to the academic ones. The reason for this is because the demand for blue collar jobs is often higher than white collar positions. Thus, the competition is less intense in terms of job searching. Furthermore, some technical jobs offer well-paid salaries with a great deal of benefits. For example, the average salary of a plumber in Canada usually ranges from $25 to $32.5 per hour. Undoubtedly, this rate is higher than most normal office positions which can only provide about $16 to $23 per hour. Another reason why one should consider going to technical colleges is because of the status. Now, many developed countries such as Canada, Australia, Finland, Germany, regard technical and occupational staff as a highly-needed workforce and they are viewed as equally important as office workers. Therefore, from all of the above explanations, I am persuaded that people should take into consideration the choice of signing up for vocational training.
To conclude, I highly oppose those who choose universities without a clear and concise plan as it could end up with little value, whereas vocational training is what I deemed should get more attention from people as it is worth it, from job prospects to status.
