The bar chart illustrates the percentage of the Australian women’s age when they delivered their first child in three different years (1966, 1986, and 2006). Overall, throughout forty years, there is an increase in the number of women going into their first labour after their 30s.
To be more specific, at the beginning of the period, the highest number belonged to the 19-24 age group, at 62%; which was followed by the percentage of the 25-30 years old, at 36%. This first ranking figure then witnessed a considerable decrease forty years later, dropping by over a half in the last year. Sharing the same downward trend was the data for the under 19 women, which started at around 34% in 1996 and stopped at 13% in 2006.
In contrast to that declining trajectory of women under 24 years old, the records of the four remaining categories went up during the recorded years, in which the first-time mothers who were 30-34 years old accounted for the greatest figure in 2006, at 45%. Compared to this triple increase, the growth in the 34-39 age group experienced the highest climbing pace, rising by more than four times after forty years, from 8% to 30%. At the end of the period, the second largest share of women fell into the 25-30 group (approximately 45%), while not many surveyed mothers were over 40 years old, taking up less than 8%.
