The bar chart provides information about the distribution of Iceland’s population across different age brackets every ten years/ at ten-year intervals between 1990 and 2020.

Overall, the most noticeable feature is that the 25-54 and 65-and-over age groups expanded over the period, while the remaining age cohorts experienced declining trends. Furthermore, 25 to 54-year-olds consistently formed the largest segment of the population throughout.

Firstly, regarding the groups which witnessed net increases, beginning at just upwards of 30%, the group of those aged 25 to 54 increased gradually, encompassing almost half the Icelandic population by the end of the period. Although the percentage of senior residents who aged 65 and over also witnessed an overall increase, this growth was rather fractional, only from 13% in 1990 to roughly 14% in 2020, with a temporary peak of 15% observed in 2010.

The climbs seen in the aforementioned demographics were offset by the drops in the percentage of those aged 55 to 64 and under 24. The 15-24 age group experienced the most significant collapse, its proportion shrank by nearly two-thirds, from approximately 22% to 8% over the given timeframe. This figure was also the smallest one among the 5 age brackets by the end of the period. Additionally, children and adolescents under 14 remained the second largest segment of the population, despite having a decline from around 25% to 18% during the same period. Finally, the smallest decline was registered in the demographic of residents aged between 55 and 64, with its shares edging down to 10% by 2020, marking a fall of 4 percentage points compared to the first year surveyed.
